The buildings which comprise Ardgowan House were built over 200 years ago by the Coats and the Clarks for their managers. They are now Grade B listed and contain many interesting architectural features including a large stained glass window dating from the early 1800's.

Since 1982 the houses have been in the hands of the Weir family and are now part of a growing family business.

Paisley
One of Scotland's most historic towns, Paisley has had an influence disproportionate to its small size.

For its disproportionate size , Scotland's largest and most historic town has proved its influence.

Everyone has heard of the world famous Paisley Pattern fabric design but how many people know that Paisley has also given the world Marmalade or that a Paisley "buddie" (as locals are known), the Rev John Witherspoon, signed the American Declaration of Independence?

According to history, Paisley's first documented settlement is said to belong to an Irish monk called St. Mirin, who established a chapel close to a natural waterfall in the River Cart, way back in the sixth century.

Thread, having a huge demand, had been made in Paisley since the eighteenth century. So, during the Napoleonic War, when supplies of silk thread were scarce, the Clark brothers experimented with a cotton substitute which, in turn, proved highly successful. The Clarks were followed by the Coats, and there have been few seamstresses throughout the world in the last 150 years who have never used the products of one or the other of these two firms.
